Book Reviews

Fantasy Novel Recommendation

Did you know? Every time you make an Amazon purchase from one of my links, you’re supporting this site.

An assassin, a thief on the run, and a shoulder dragon.

Book cover for The Book of JheregThe Book of Jhereg, by Steven Brust is a collection of three Vlad Taltos tales: Jhereg, Yendi, and Teckla. The writing is full of witty banter and mouthwatering meal descriptions.

The titular adventure includes the story of how Vlad came upon his familiar, the jhereg named Loiosh. Watching Loiosh evolve from helpless hatchling to wise-cracking shoulder dragon is a satisfying journey, though it is not the main focus of the adventure. Rather, someone with ties to the Jhereg Council has absconded with a considerable amount of money— and it’s Vlad’s job to find the rascal and “deal” with the problem.

But when the thief manipulates Vlad’s friend into offering him sanctuary at Castle Black, things get a little bit sticky.
